Beginner Tips for Motorcycle Commuting

When you first get a motorcycle, the feeling can be overwhelming. If you’ve only ever commuted in a car, getting the opportunity to go about your day-to-day activities on a motorcycle can feel like a chance to really let loose and enjoy your surroundings.
However, as with anything, there is good and bad. Motorcycle commuting isn’t all good. If done incorrectly, it can be downright stressful and uncomfortable. Before you commit to commuting on a motorcycle, check out these quick tips.
- Get A Reliable Bike
This should be a given, but you should always make sure the vehicle you plan on commuting on is reliable. Make sure you maintain your motorcycle so it can get you back and forth without issues. Don’t skimp on regular maintenance, like checking plugs, cables, and your oil. Even doing these simple things can mean a world of difference when commuting every day. - Invest In A Motorcycle-Specific GPS System
Unless you only plan on going back and forth to the same spot, you’re going to want to invest in a motorcycle GPS device. Popular models like the Garmin Zumo GPS are waterproof, easier to see and use, and offer more functionality than using the built-in GPS on your phone. They are designed specifically for the needs of motorcyclists. When you’re riding, you want to be able to pay attention to the road, not fiddle around with your phone trying to get the GPS to work correctly. - Take The Route Less Traveled
Getting stuck in traffic on a motorcycle is worse than getting stuck in traffic in a car. One a bike, it’s hotter, your back starts to hurt, and if anyone doesn’t see traffic slowing down during a backup, getting rear-ended can be deadly. Research less traveled routes so you can avoid all the hassle. Even if the alternate route takes an extra 5-10 minutes, it's worth it to keep cruising rather than getting caught in a traffic jam. - Be Prepared For Rain
If you’re commuting on a motorcycle, make sure you always have some sort of rain gear with you. Make sure you always check the weather before you go. If you get stuck having to travel in the rain, you’re going to get soaked. If you have any important meetings, you may as well cancel them if you’re just going to show up sopping wet. Even a light waterproof jacket can make a world of difference when you find yourself forced to commute during a storm. - Remember To Enjoy Yourself
Commuting on a motorcycle can be beautiful. When you're going about your day to day life, remember to take time to enjoy everything around you. If you have a speaker or motorcycle- friendly headphones, get some music going and have a good time during your commute.Life can sometimes be mind-numbing. Let your motorcycle commute be your break. Let it be your escape from the world for a few short minutes every day. With this mindset, you’re going to love your daily commute.
